Do I need a paid account to make customized layouts work? The ones I've tried all look weird... :/

Yes and No.

If you want a layout not based on the theme that you get with your basic account, you can create a custom theme, then copy in a CSS code that works with that theme. I think someone listed to a community here that walks one through it.

Otherwise, Yes you would have to have a paid account, from what I understand.

Have you had a look at [community profile] dreamwidthlayouts?

I don't know what's up. The two layouts I installed worked super.

From [livejournal.com profile] thefulcrum. I just read the comments below and the thing may be that, if you import LJ layouts, you need to choose layouts that are not based on a LJ stylesheet, thus only the ones with all options on NO in the CSS box thingy.

Besides, your current layout looks fine to me now!

Ooh! My chance to help you after all the stuff you've done for me. *fingers crossed this will help*

Did you remember to check the "use this layout's custom stylesheet(s)" box? Sounds elementary, I know, but I was having all sorts of trouble until I figured out that I forgot that one lil' thing.

I'm not sure, but trying it out costs you a mere 5 seconds.
